Have you ever done a massive workout, sweated like a pig and come out of it feeling a little shaken but A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.? That’s what a far-infrared sauna (FIR) is like – only you don’t have to work out. What’s more, the cardiovascular and health benefits, as researched as they are, take a backseat when you consider how good it feels to sweat your stresses away.
Now, I’ve been using these FIR saunas since the mid-naughties, when someone told me that they were jokingly referred to as detox boxes and were used to help first responders after 911. Since then I’ve been in awe of the fact that the sauna heat in an FIR can remain low while the ‘good’ (not the bad) infrared rays penetrate the skin to draw toxins out of fat cells (yes you read that right). Consequently a session in an infrared sauna is one where you can see, feel and indeed, even smell the results!
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is sad but true that when our body is sweating stuff out, it can smell bad, it can soak a previously dry towel and the oily, sticky sweat can even stain it too. Over the years I’ve tried a few different saunas, but have got to say the whole experience went to the next level when I used the one at Koala Health & Beauty. It’s an iHealth, low EMF number with special coloured ambient lights to help give you a personalised experience. One colour will help you sleep while another will help you relax. Personally, I prefer to use the light switch like I do a television remote control, I flick through all the colours until I find one I like. In all seriousness though, this sauna works hard.
The sweat took only about ten minutes to start, in other machines it has taken me up to twenty or even thirty minutes to break a sweat. The other thing is – this sweat was different, it was really sticky – so I knew it was working well. It’s at this point, you may feel a little uncomfortable, so here’s what I do to make the experience easier. I love to drink coconut water to replenish and remain hydrated and if the heat ever feels too much I just open the door and let a bit of cooler air in until I feel comfortable again. After all, that’s what it’s all about – being relaxed, enjoying the way it feels and knowing that you are rewarding yourself with this infrared heat.
fter about thirty minutes (or less if you’re just starting out) you wipe off the sweat and have a refreshing shower. Be sure to soap well and wash your hair as well, with all the bad stuff sweated out, it’d be a shame to soak it all back in again! You’ll feel like a million bucks and although you might be a bit red that day, by the next day you’ll be looking as good as you feel.
